At present Clinical Psychologists do Forensic Psychological Assessments as part of their work in the broader field of Forensic Psychology, they are often referred to as Forensic Psychologists. Forensic Psychology is in actual fact a sub-discipline where Clinical Psychology meets Criminology. However at present the registration category of Forensic Psychologist is under review by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. After the formal registrations in the category Forensic Psychologist has opened, Clinical Psychologists will be able to apply for registration in the category of Forensic Psychology. At this stage the practice area of Forensic Psychological Assessments and Forensic Psychology fall within the scope of practice of Clinical Psychologists, thus in the field of Clinical Psychology and in the field of Dr. Henk J. Swanepoel.

Dr. Henk J. Swanepoel assessment process is designed to help address questions about the possible nature and causes of psychological problems or psychological distress that a client may be experiencing or has experienced in the past.

In these cases, the focus is not on psychological treatment (psychotherapy) but rather gaining psychological understanding of a person, making a psychological diagnosis or determining a client’s psychological functioning at a certain point in time. Due to the nature of this assessment, this assessment the information obtained and opinion given is not of a confidential nature.

Psycho-legal assessment involves a four part process, namely:

  • Clinical interviews (between 1 and 4 hours)
  • Psychometric assessment (between 1 and 4 hours)
  • Collateral interviews and / or the reading of documentation
  • Research if required

The psychological opinion and psycho-legal report compiled will be based on these four pillars.

Once the psycho-legal assessment has been completed and the psycho-legal report has been submitted, the report will be given to the client. This report can then be handed to the court for use during the court proceedings as evidence pertaining to the matter at hand.
